Sunderland's software solution

Sunderland City Council has made use of innovative technology to deliver more responsive public services and drive local growth against a backdrop of budget cuts and rising resident demand, writes Jonathan Werran

In 2010, Sunderland's Economic Masterplan came to the conclusion that despite a growth in job numbers, the city was home to too narrow a range of industries.

Embedded structural economic problems meant issues of low average incomes, benefit dependency, health inequalities, lower than average life expectancy and the exodus of young people from the city needed addressing.
