Super League would be an own goal for communities

Football clubs are more than Saturday sports venues, says Heather Jameson. 'It is about partnerships across a place, delivering service, support and connections. To lose a key player would be an own goal.'

It was only last week that the latest lockdown easing saw pubs opening up – albeit outdoors, for al fresco drinking. Very fresco, as it turned out, as Brits braved the odd flake of snow in an effort to get to the pub for the first time in months. We Brits are odd.

A week on, it is all change. We are basking in glorious sunshine and up in arms about another national obsession – football. The outcry over plans to cherry-pick some of the top teams in the UK for a European Super League have gone down like a lead ball.
