Supporting sustainable transport

When Southend-on-Sea decided to use behavioural science to change people’s transport habits, it put its Ideas in Motion programme in action and cut the number of drivers on its roads, writes Jonathan Werran

Southend-on-Sea had a problem, and that problem was transport. Research showed average vehicle speeds had plummeted to 18.6 miles per hour at the peak of the morning rush hour, the lowest in the East of England.

Building on this strong track record from recent years, the town has proved through two examples it has an uncanny ability to achieve key objectives through creative use of its balance sheet and its property.
