Age UK has called on councils to protect social care budgets for older people, after a survey revealed almost 90% of local authorities were increasing care charges.

According to the survey of more than 50 directors of adult services by the Labour Party, charges would rise this year in 88% of councils. It also revealed that 63% of local authorities were shutting day centres or care homes, and 16% were increasing eligibility criteria over the next two years.
