A web based Geographical Information System (GIS) developed to help the residents of Dorset has received its first real test in the flood hit areas of Cumbria and Lancashire. Originally conceived more than 10 years ago, the application known as SWIM (Severe Weather Information Management) has evolved through many different generations of technology. The Environment Agency (EA) has been involved in this evolution from the start.

After the severe floods that hit Dorset in July 2012 and the South West in 2013/14, SWIM was revised again to assist Dorset CC to fulfil its duties as a Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA). It enables members of the public, flood wardens, the EA and local government officers to record the details of flooded homes, businesses and communities. As a member of the community, individuals can report flooding to their own home or business. Victims of flooding are encouraged to contact the emergency services if their life or property is in danger, but for all other flooding issues SWIM is there to help.
