Tackling the high street challenge head-on

The latest Local Government Association high streets leadership programme highlighted how councils are beginning to plan for a future that is no longer dominated by retail, says Matt Baker.

When it comes to measuring progress, it is often a subtle change in language and a deft shift in perspective that is most revealing.

Sometimes the best way of seeing how leaders are tackling challenges is by noting how they talk about them. A case in point can be seen in the new-found confidence shown by senior councillors at the recent Local Government Association (LGA) high streets leadership programme at Loughborough University.
