Taking on the house

The leaders of Southwark and Sheffield councils talk to Emily Twinch about what the Budget delivered for housing and why longer-term certainty on social rent settlements is needed.

While last month's Budget might not have been great for businesses and individuals in terms of national insurance and tax hikes, it brought better news for housing.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves pledged £5bn for the next financial year to help reach the Government's target of 1.5m new homes in the next Parliament, with the Affordable Homes Programme given a £500m boost.
