We need to talk about the state of the state

We are trying to pay for public services with a tax system based on property and full-time employment as we shift to online shopping and the gig economy, writes Heather Jameson.

The chancellor's final spring Budget brought a welcome cash boost for social care, but quicker than you could say ‘broken tax promises,' most of the sector had announced it was not enough.

Of course it's not enough – how could it be? With baby boomers hitting old age and a rise in our ability to help people live longer, the pressures on the care system are rising. The ‘graphs of doom' have dawned, and still there is no solution. That's even before you consider the implications of rising children's services costs and homelessness issues.
