Think tanks from opposite ends of the political spectrum have been asked to engage in a war of ideas over the best way to house the country's ageing population.

Commissioned by housing provider Hanover to mark its 50th anniversary, rivals Policy Exchange and the Fabian Society found common cause in the belief inter-generational unfairness had arisen from home-ownership being concentrated among older people.
