Tell me the truth about statistics

Lies, and statistics, is the phrase used whenever a journalist is asked about official government figures, says Jonathan Werran.

Lies, damned lies and statistics, is the phrase invariably trotted out whenever a journalist is asked to comment on official government figures.

The quote is commonly attributed to Benjamin Disraeli, but was in fact coined by US author Mark Twain, who sought to sell it for popular consumption through that political titan of the Victorian age. Latterly, more astute political commentators prefer to canter to the patrician gallop of Alan Clark.
