The problem with polls

Peter Stanyon outlines the risks and pressures Super Thursday poses to a ‘creaking electoral system’ – including mounting election costs that are arriving at the wrong time for local government.

With 6 May only two months away, electoral administrators are facing a raft of challenges caused by the ongoing pandemic and sheer size and combination of polls.

Postponing the 2020 local elections was the right decision but combining them with scheduled 2021 elections has created the most complex set of polls in a generation. Add pandemic measures, and the pressure on a creaking electoral system has intensified.
