With so much uncertainty ahead, council officers need to be as good as possible at what they do, and that involves investing in the sector’s own workforce and in the communities it serves, says Gavin Jones.

Who among us is brave enough to predict the future of local government? As Niels Bohr put it: ‘Prediction is very difficult, especially if it's about the future.'

In my time in local government there has been so much change that I could never have envisaged. Who would have thought we would be inspecting critical infrastructure with drones? Or sequencing social care reviews with algorithms and using robots in social care settings?
