Town halls welcome EU fines move

Town hall chiefs back decision to invite parliamentary scrutiny of ministerial plan to impose European-related fines on councils.

A decision to invite Parliamentary scrutiny of any ministerial plan to impose European-related fines on councils has been backed by town hall chiefs.

Under European Union (EU) law, states that fail to fulfil obligations can be taken to the Court of Justice, where infractions are subject to minimum penalties of around £7m and hefty daily fines thereafter until issues are resolved.
