Hundreds of towns across the country have bid to become one of the first 'Portas pilots', through which they could receive a share of a £1.2m government cash pot.

Hundreds of towns across the country have bid to become one of the first ‘Portas pilots', through which they could receive a share of a £1.2m government cash pot to help rejuvenate moribund high streets.

A total of 371 towns are in the running to become one of 12 pilot areas in the first wave of the scheme, with final results expected in May.
