The Treasury is ‘continuing to look at' setting council chief executive pay centrally in a move that would fly in the face of localism.

Speaking to a Public Accounts Committee hearing yesterday, Treasury Permanent secretary Sir Nicholas Macpherson suggested there had been an ‘extraordinary shift' in wage levels for chief executives, comparing his own pay to that of the chief executive of ‘say,.. Kensington and Chelsea'.
