Tributes paid to former LGA finance head

Tributes have been paid after former finance director of the Local Government Association, Stephen Jones, died after a short illness.

Tributes have been paid after former finance director of the Local Government Association, Stephen Jones, died suddenly this week after a short illness.

Mr Jones joined the LGA in 2007 after 30 years in HM Revenue and Customs and retired in 2012.

Among the many Twitter tributes Kristian Hibberd called him ‘a remarkable person'.

Former Local Government Association chairman Margaret, Baroness Eaton praised Mr Jones, for his role in helping local authorities keep their deposits after the Icelandic banking crisis in 2008.

In her tribute to him in The MJ this week Baroness Eaton who was LGA chairman from 2008 to 2011 and is a vice-president said: ‘One of the most anxious times for me as chairman of the organisation was dealing with the issues resulting from the Icelandic banking crisis.

'Stephen waded in unflappable and worked out exactly what should be done and got on with it.

'The local authorities that have now been compensated have Stephen to thank for his foresight and his determination to see them as preferred creditors.'

She added: ‘I will always remember warmly the person who gave such support and expertise to the organisation and to me personally.

'Stephen will be greatly missed by all who knew him.'

Current LGA chairman Cllr Gary Porter, said: ‘His passing is deeply sad for all of us who had the pleasure of working with him.

'He will always be remembered as the man who went to 'Iceland' and saved our country millions.'
