The truth about accountability, transparency and f iscal health

Heather Jameson says that just because there is local democracy, it doesn’t mean councils don’t have to be transparent and accountable.

Local government is a sector that, quite rightly, prides itself on many things. It is the frontline of democracy and community. It is the backstop for the vulnerable and it is the voice of place. It's also a stickler for accountability and transparency. But sometimes the sector forgets that last bit.

Last week's front page story, which revealed accountants CIPFA was planning a traffic light grading system for the financial sustainability of local authorities, has caused quite a furore. ‘Red' councils fear they will be named and shamed.
