Give UK counties the baton in the global race

Jim Harker argues counties need a fair share of growth funding, commensurate with their contribution to GVA, to get the national economy motoring in the next parliament.

When considering economic growth counties had cause to welcome the priorities set out in the 2014 Budget. The chancellor claimed ‘we support manufacturers and back all regions of our country' in the pursuit of a ‘Britain that builds things again.'

It sounded like central government was listening to what County Councils Network (CCN) members have long been saying – diversification is key to the sustainability the UK's recovery and international competitiveness.

Looking beyond the success of the service sector and a resurgent but volatile London, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and other experts agree that the UK needs our manufacturing, construction and agriculture sectors to thrive in order for ‘UK Plc' to successfully compete in the global race.
