The UK's leisure centres must evolve in order to survive

With current plans failing, we must deliver a new leisure model that prioritises local communities and ‘place’ above all else, says Jim Roberts.

Last month, the Public Accounts Committee published a scathing report detailing the failure of the 2012 London Olympics to deliver the promised benefits of the Games – most notably in leisure activity rates.

What's more, it pointed out the mismanagement of the £1.5bn Olympic legacy budget by Sport England, with two-thirds of funding going unaccounted for in terms of positive impacts on community leisure.
