Amid all the chaos in Brexit Britain, one question puzzles me. Why is the trade union Unite organising binmen in Birmingham?
I may be old-fashioned, but I always though the core of Unite's membership were derived from its founding unions – engineering workers, electricians, transport and factory workers. Clearly, I am going back to the days when trade unions had names that meant something, such as the National Union of Public Employees and the National Association of Local Government Officers rather than meaningless made up names like Unite –and, apologies to my younger readers who are probably wondering what a trade union actually is.
