Unions issue jobs warning

GMB calculates 380,500 local authority job losses since 2010, Unison reckons 4 jobseekers for each vacancy in local areas.

Local authorities across Great Britain have made 380,500 staff cutbacks since the 2010 general election, a 14.7% cut in employees, the GMB trade union has calculated.

The number of people employed in local authorities has decreased from 2,559,000 in the first quarter of 2010 to 2,178,500 by the third quarter of 2012, analysis of official  public sector employment statistics indicates.
