Local government trade unions have accused the coalition of ‘stripping down' their commitment to equal pay, after ministers ditched plans to force business to reveal how much they pay men and women.

Unison general secretary Dave Prentis said the move was ‘confirmation that the gender pay gap is still struggling to be closed, with those at the bottom being ignored by big bosses'.
