Unions lose High Court battle over pensions switch

Judges say the government was lawful in switching the measures of inflation from RPI to CPI.

Judges have today ruled the government was lawful in switching the measure of inflation used to raise public sector pensions from the faster moving Retail Prices Index (RPI) to the Consumer Prices Index (CPI).

The High Court rejected a legal challenge brought by six public sector unions arguing the measure - introduced in April - breached social security laws preventing national economic considerations from determining inflation rates.
