Universal benefit?

Professor Henry Overman questions whether available evidence backs up the need to make ultrafast broadband universally available in cities and shires.

It's been impossible to avoid the recent headlines about the state of broadband in the UK – including claims that ‘economic powerhouse' London has some of the worst speeds and connectivity in the nation.

While it appears these stories may simply reflect specific pockets of the capital experiencing disproportionately poor service, the controversy generated by recent reports (from both the public and private sector) on broadband provision indicates just how important this issue is to people's daily lives.
