Upskill before it's too late

Decisive action is needed to improve local government recruitment and retention, says Peter Cudlip.

The UK public sector is grappling with a significant recruitment and retention crisis, and it's likely this will only get worse as skills gaps emerge without enough new talent entering the industry who can plug the shortfall.

Mazars recently surveyed public and social sector workers, finding that 21% agreed the workforce will be less skilled in five years' time and 87% believe retirements will threaten future service continuity. Both are worrying statistics when considering the sector employs around six million people responsible for the delivery of essential services. It's clear immediate action is needed to future-proof the workforce and foster new talent.
