Elected city mayors should have their salaries independently set by the Government's senior salaries' review body (SSRB), chair of the home affairs select Committee, Keith Vaz has suggested.

In a letter penned to the Leicester Mercury, the MP says elected officials should never decide on their own pay, a principle accepted by parliamentarians several years ago.
