Liverpool City Region (LCR), like other parts of England with mayoral combined authorities, is being tasked with helping to deliver on the Government's ‘missions'. With the region represented entirely by Labour MPs for the first time in its history following the General Election, and a Labour metro mayor (Steve Rotheram) in place since 2017, LCR is well placed to contribute to the Government's agenda, particularly in areas such as energy and public services.

The first months of the new administration have seen a flurry of activity focused on LCR and the wider North West. HyNet, a network of pipes that will carry captured emissions to be sequestered under Liverpool Bay, is one of two Carbon Capture Storage projects to receive a combined £22bn of government funding over the next 25 years. Rumours about the future of HS2 north of Birmingham have sparked discussions about the need for improvements to east-west rail connectivity between Liverpool and Manchester. And the Industrial Strategy Green Paper highlights the potential of several sectors in which the region has particular strengths, notably advanced manufacturing, clean energy industries and life sciences.
