Will the voices of the South be heard on devo?

Paul Marinko examines the prospects for devolution deals for the South of England – and concludes that if ministers are hoping for grand reorganisation plans for grabbing some of the ‘devolution cake’, they may be disappointed.

Four months is a long time in local government. Rewind to December and Boris Johnson was wheeling out the mantra of ‘levelling up'. His eyes firmly fixed on shoring up the northern ‘red wall' seats that helped get him back into Number 10.

The world is a very different place now. With Whitehall's perceived geographic distinctions swept aside for the moment at least, the Government's focus is on the national picture.
