The transition to individual electoral registration, the biggest such reform in more than 80 years meets a crunch test next month. With the May 2015 general election looming, Alex Stevenson assesses the current state of play.

When it comes to voter registration, all the signs are that constitution minister Sam Gyimah is set for a thoroughly unpleasant early Christmas present.

1st December will be the big day. That's the deadline for the publication of the next electoral registers for England and Wales. We'll find out exactly how many of the 40,000,000-odd people eligible to vote in the UK are actually registered to do so.
