Accident and emergency waiting times have soared to an eight-year high – up by more than one-quarter over the past year – according to a report by a leading health charity.

The King's Fund said the increase in patients waiting more than four hours in emergency rooms reflected ‘growing pressure' on the hospitals sector as the NHS tried to identify £20bn in productivity improvements.
