Watchdog slams DfE's light-touch for allowing schools failure to go undetected

Some schools are falling through the gaps and failing undetected because of confusion arising from the Department for Education’s lack of a coherent strategy for academic oversight, an influential spending watchdog has reported.

Some schools are falling through the gaps and failing undetected because of confusion arising from the Department for Education's lack of a coherent strategy for academic oversight, an influential spending watchdog has reported.

A report issued today by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) also found councils were unwilling to step in to ensure proper safeguarding at academies because of strong messages about protecting the autonomy of schools freed from local authority control.
