Councils and emergency services were this week swift to deploy flood-prevention measures across areas of northern England and Wales, after heavy rain caused floods and severely disrupted communities.

The Environment Agency quickly despatched experts to minimise risks and prepare for flooding in Cumbria, Durham, Lancashire, Northumberland and Yorkshire – after worrying rises in river levels led to significant disruption to road and rail services.
