Welcome to 'the Age of Intermediate Care'

An additional £1.3bn in COVID emergency funding last March ‘jump-started’ Intermediate Care, say Iain MacBeath and Ralph Cook. If this focus continues the results would be game-changing, they add.

With increasing levels of frailty in our aging population, and higher expectations that people will want to go home rather than to care homes, this should be the era of the physiotherapist and occupational therapist, complemented with integrated nursing and care services and the latest technology. It is time for us to enter what our new report calls ‘the Age of Intermediate Care'

After two decades of talking about the potential of Intermediate Care but struggling to give it wings, the landscape has changed, quickly and dramatically. The pandemic has truly proved to be a lightbulb moment for it. Over the last year, the benefits of Intermediate Care have been proved beyond question, and for the first time, there is now unanimity across the sector on its strategic importance.
