Welfare cuts 'will hit housing handouts'

Government plans to deliver £12bn welfare cuts by 2017/18, as outlined in the Conservative Party manifesto, are most likely to result in further reductions to housing benefit expenditure, public finance experts have predicted.

Government plans to deliver £12bn welfare cuts by 2017/18, as outlined in the Conservative Party manifesto, are most likely to result in further reductions to housing benefit expenditure, public finance experts have predicted.

A summary report issued by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) on 26 May said the annual £26bn housing benefit bill makes up around one-fifth of total £125bn unprotected welfare expenditure.
