Welsh councils' performance data published

Welsh Government publishes performance data outlining how each of the 22 current local authorities has delivered from a citizens view.

The Welsh Government has today released performance data outlining how each of the 22 current local authorities in Wales has delivered from a residents' perspective.

The third annual collation of local authority performance statistics covers a range of issues including delayed care transfers, schools attendance, affordable housing, road conditions, recycling rates and library visits as well as satisfaction rates for each authority.

Data collected for the compendium helped inform last week's Williams Commission on Public Service Governance and Delivery.  The Williams Commission outlined options for merging Welsh councils into 10, 11 or 12 authorities by using existing boundaries.

This year's publication also includes case studies for each Welsh local authority based on visits made last summer by local government and government business minister Lesley Griffiths.

Mr Griffiths said continued financial tightening and increased demand for key services meant improving performance must remain the top priority.

‘The recent report of the Williams Commission has opened a debate on how public services are delivered in Wales,' Mr Griffiths said.

‘However, it is crucial we remember this is about much more than questions of organisation and structures,' he added.

Mr Griffiths said: ‘We must not pause in the pursuit of transformational change in the design and delivery of our public services to ensure they are high quality, sustainable and centred around the citizen.'
