West Berkshire reshuffles pack after £10m savings plan

West Berkshire council leaders have overseen a reshuffle in the immediate aftermath of proposals to save £10m next year - £3m of which will be taken out of funding for frontline services.

West Berkshire council leaders have overseen a reshuffle in the immediate aftermath of proposals to save £10m next year - £3m of which will be taken out of funding for frontline services.

Cllr Graham Jones is stepping down from his role as executive member for health and wellbeing and community safety in order to assume a new part-time role with the NHS.

He is replaced by Cllr Marcus Franks, who will take on the health and wellbeing role and Cllr Graham Pask who assumes the community partnership brief.

West Berkshire must find £5m savings in each of the next two years from a total £120m council budget.

However, West Berkshire leader, Cllr Gordon Lundie has pledged to freeze council tax over this time.

He has pledged to keep libraries and children's centres open, although funding will be cut and also introduce Sunday parking charges

‘We have the same number of children's centres and libraries as in 2010 and have increased our support in other critical areas like adult social care, school improvement and roads maintenance - all whilst keeping the budget balanced,' said Cllr Lundie

"Next year, the council has to reduce the amount it spends by £5m.

‘The following year it will be at least the same and, if the government further re-allocates monies for education, it could mean £6m or more to be saved.'
