West country councils deride 'pitiful' rural top up cash

DCLG cash sweetener to close the funding gap between urban and rural authorities dismissed as too little and makes case for finance reform more urgent.

West Country MPs have branded as ‘pitiful' a cash sweetener offered by Government to close the funding gap between urban and rural authorities.

Following representations by Conservative and Liberal Democrat MPs, coalition ministers in the Department for Communities and Local Government announced in February a £2m top-up fund to address the disparity which sees city areas receive 50% more per-head than countryside areas.
