West Sussex's sugar reduction success

West Sussex CC has managed to cut the amount of sugar used in school dinners by almost 75% in four years, in collaboration with its main meals provider Chartwells, says Anna Raleigh

West Sussex CC's public health officers have been working very closely with our county catering services since the end of 2014 to help reduce the amount of sugar used in the preparation of school dinners – and that work has paid off with a reduction of almost 75% in just four years.

That is more than five double decker buses-worth of sugar struck off from our primary school dinners' annual shopping list. It is a move that has not only led to healthier school dinners, but has proven that less sugar doesn't necessarily have to mean compromising on taste, as our young panel of primary school meal taste testers have confirmed.
