I'm all in favour of democracy but you wonder sometimes whether we've got too much of it. I mean take the local elections which are one big yawn.

We don't expect to vote for the geezers who run our hospitals so why do we need to vote for the ones who look after our old codgers or for that matter who empty our bins and sweep the streets?
