Whole government response required to secure councils' finances

Making councils financially sustainable requires a whole government response led by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), says the National Audit Office (NAO).

In a report published today, the independent public spending watchdog  said local government finances are becoming unsustainable due to increasing demand on essential frontline services, the impact of delayed finance reform and the decline of investment in preventative programmes.
