Wigan MBC has warned it requires another 700 voluntary redundancies to balance its books – a move that could spark industrial action by local trade unions.

The additional redundancy requirement – revealed by finance chief Paul McKevitt – could come on top of a head count reduction of 400 already made at the Labour-led unitary through retirements and voluntary redundancies.
