Female staff accounted for nearly seven out of ten town hall redundancies made since the start of 2010, figures analysed by the GMB trade union indicate.

According to its analysis of official statistics, 375 councils in England and Wales laid off 210,470 employees between the first quarter of 2010 and the third quarter of 2011.
