Wrestling with public service markets

Jonathan Werran argues the case for a mixed market in public service provision.

The recent demise of outsourcing and construction behemoth Carillion has sparked much debate on the role of the private sector in delivering public services. Focus has now shifted to assessing the financial resilience of former rivals also seen as ‘too big to fail'.

And it is only right that there should be scrutiny into how taxpayer money – at local and central level – is used in the delivery of frontline public services that shape the lives of us all.
