Councils urged to take on data firms

Councils should be empowered to acquire and make use of digital data for the benefit of communities and challenge the dominance of big tech companies, a new report has argued.

The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) think-tank found that developments during the coronavirus crisis such as contact-tracing apps have served to increase the collection, storage, analysis and application of data by a relatively small number of multinational firms.
