It’s time to regulate the regulator

Protecting children is the most important thing councils do, but they cannot do it alone. Helping the next generation grow up safe and healthy depends on all parts of the system pulling together and it needs to be overseen by an effective inspection regime.

It is clear that Ofsted is not playing its part and we need a full independent review of the inspectorate’s work.

A child at risk is not leading a stable life. A sophisticated approach is needed to address a complex range of factors. Social workers, police, probation officers and health professionals among others all have a role to play.

Everyone needs to act as one in the interests of children, passing on information at the right time to keep them safe. Recent high profile cases underline just what can happen when things go wrong.
