Liverpool City Council has launched a three month consultation that could lead to the abolition of its elected mayor post.
City solicitor Dan Fenwick said the council had chosen to consult rather than hold a referendum as it was the only mechanism that will allow residents to choose between all three governance arrangements: maintaining the elected mayor system, a leader chosen by councillors or a committee structure.
