The major challenges facing local government are clear for all to see – but that hasn’t stopped previous secretaries of state closing their eyes to them. Early indications from James Brokenshire are that he is willing to listen and engage with local government, rather than just dictate and berate. But what Labour leaders will be looking for is that he will be honest enough to admit continued austerity is now seriously threatening the survival of local government.
