'Trailblazing' chief Sir Howard Bernstein to step down

Manchester City Council chief executive Sir Howard Bernstein has announced he will be standing down next year after almost half a century at the authority.

Manchester City Council chief executive Sir Howard Bernstein has announced he will be standing down next year after almost half a century at the authority.

Sir Howard - who spearheaded major regeneration projects in the city in the wake of the 1996 IRA bombings and is widely considered a devolution 'trailblazer', having established the Greater Manchester Combined Authority in 2011 - will retire in spring.
