One of local government's most active Twitter users has urged social media sites to act to eradicate abuse aimed at public figures.

Leeds City Council chief executive Tom Riordan said that while he found Twitter to be an invaluable tool he had been subject to some ‘awful trolling' online and was aware of much worse abuse aimed at others, particularly women.
