Could greater acceptance of risk be what the public sector needs?

An environment in which courage and empowerment to take risk is matched with the transparency and accountability to manage it will allow public services to thrive, says Iain Murray

When seeking a definition for the word ‘risk', you will be met with terms that evoke danger or a serious threat to safety. This sentiment is reinforced by numerous examples of risk-taking behaviour that continue to hit the headlines. The resounding message is clear – risk should be avoided at all costs. Well, I hope not entirely. 

Recently, over the course of just a few days I heard leaders from regulatory or stewardship bodies give clear recognition to the role that risk needs to play in improving productivity and public service delivery.
